I'm a young designer living in southern England in the United Kingdom. After developing a passion for design and technology at GCSE and A-Level, I studied B.Sc. Product Design and Manufacture at Bournemouth University.
BioLogic™ ZorinPump
The BioLogic™ ZorinPump is a combination of bicycle seat-post and powerful floor-pump. The pump mechanism is hidden inside the post and uses this as the outer wall of the pump. The device is always at hand, hidden from the elements and thieves, and can inflate a tire in as few as dozen strokes. Ergonomically, the pump is just like a standard floor-pump: you stand while you pump and use the saddle as a handle. International patented technology.
The Idea
The BioLogic™ ZorinPump began life as a university final-year major project. I knew I wanted to develop a new type of bicycle pump, but finding inspiration for a totally new solution was proving difficult. One evening it just so happened that I had a bicycle in my living room without the seat-post and saddle assembly located in the frame. This was the 'light-bulb' moment where I could visualise the seat-post becoming a track sized pump.
The Problems
I had to find out everything for myself from raising finance to volume production options. My final-year university product was nowhere near production ready so I needed to spend a significant amount of time and money on development afterwards. The challenges were mainly financial planning and building relationships with suppliers.
The Solution
Thankfully with very few exceptions, I managed to surround myself with people that I could rely on and trust for the very best advice. This included bank managers, business advisers, patent attorneys and manufacturing contacts. I always looked for people that were interested in the product and who could understand my foresight and drive.
The Success
I became involved with Dahon, the world's largest folding bike manufacturer. Under an exclusive agreement, they now build ZorinPumps under license. Pumps are manufactured for Dahon and other manufacturer's bikes as original equipment. A retro-fit 'accessory' version is also on the market. The pump is on sale in nearly 30 countries.
